The Real Power of Spring Cleaning

Mar 24, 2026

There is a reason the urge to clean, clear clutter or reorganize stirs in almost everyone when spring arrives. Research shows that as daylight increases in spring, serotonin levels rise and the brain naturally shifts into a more active, motivated state. This makes us feel more alert, more optimistic, and more inclined to take action.

Did you know that the practice of spring cleaning dates back thousands of years and was observed across ancient civilizations long before modern cleaning products existed? That's because people noticed even then, that clearing out their spaces after winter made them feel better and function more effectively. Especially before electricity, when homes accumulated soot and residue from fireplaces and candles, the spring weather was a key time to open windows wide enough to air everything out. Back then, deep cleaning was not just a seasonal ritual, but a genuine necessity for health and survival.

Today, some traditions still honour spring cleaning to symbolize the removal of spiritual impurity, or because they believe a clean home invites fresh energy, good fortune, and wellbeing into family life. Across every culture, historically, human beings have understood intuitively what science is now confirming, that the state of your space can directly affect various aspects of your life.

A study from Princeton University found that physical clutter competes for your attention whether you are aware of it or not, constantly sending a signal to your brain that there is unfinished business. The result is low-grade stress that can split your focus and drain your energy all day long without you even realizing it.

Research has also shown that clutter raises cortisol levels not just in the moment of seeing a mess, but chronically and continuously until it's sorted. People who simply described their home as chaotic had higher levels of stress throughout the day compared to those who described their homes as comfortable or cozy.

Other studies revealed that people who lived and worked in cleaner, more organized environments actually made healthier food choices, were more productive, and reported feeling significantly more in control of their lives.

Even the simple act of making your bed in the morning has been linked to higher productivity and a greater sense of calm for the rest of the day. Therefore, cleaning in general, is a good practice to implement on a regular basis throughout the year.

One essential thing to note, is that your spaces hold energy. Even though it's invisible, stagnant, heavy, or blocked energy can accumulate in your home and office and potentially interfere with your productivity, focus and well-being. This energy can contribute to feelings of fatigue, low mood, creative blocks, and a general sense that things are not moving forward in life.

This is why energy clearing practices such as sound healing and intention setting for example, have been used alongside physical cleaning for thousands of years. At Sunkyeong Toronto, we offer a powerful method to help clear your space energetically that will last for several months.
