How to Beat Burnout

If you have been enduring a prolonged state of physical, emotional or mental exhaustion due to excessive work or stress, you may be experiencing burnout syndrome.

It’s primarily a lifestyle of never really stopping due to constant caregiving or over achieving and it can lead to feelings of helplessness and loss of motivation over time. If this sounds like you, it’s not your fault.

Somehow it’s become commonplace to adopt a 24/7 routine. You’ve learned how to be busy by day, and to keep going at night. As a result, you may often over-ride your body’s signals and have come to accept a state of fatigue as ‘normal.’ 

Unfortunately, sometimes the demands of life can be overwhelming and highly demanding. It’s one thing to be busy and productive but the issue is, you can only go so far if your energy becomes depleted. When your energy becomes too low you may experience some of the following symptoms of burnout:

  • Waking up tired no matter how much you sleep
  • Feeling emotionally flat, irritable, or disconnected
  • Brain fog, headaches, or body heaviness
  • Losing motivation for things you once cared about
  • Feeling “on empty” with nothing left to give

This is where having a self-care routine in place is essential. Being able to set healthy boundaries with others and around your work can help. Of course, having structure around sleep routines, carving out some 'me time', proper nutrition and gentle exercise are also beneficial.
